Beauty is an experience that defies analysis and has no explanation. It gives us pleasure, perhaps the highest pleasure we have. Yet, it is meaningless to write about it. The less said, the better. “Why is it beautiful?” There is no answer to that question.
Instinctively, we reach out for attractive things; beauty literally moves us.
When people use the word beauty in design they are seeking refuge from all of the difficulties of modern life – all of its doubts, fears and challenges. They are attempting to place themselves outside of the machinations of taste and beyond the eccentricities of fashion. Our lives are often happier when they are surrounded by beautiful things. The places in which we live matter, and
the cultivation of beautiful spaces has a very immediate impact on the happiness and flourishing of human beings.
Beauty is a multi-faceted, mysterious thing that somehow brings happiness to humanity. Yet if we merely absorb its aesthetic pleasures without considering why we enjoy it, we only receive satisfaction from its presence. Through the pursuit of beauty we shape the world as a home, and in doing so we both amplify our joys and find consolation for our sorrows.
Frank Lloyd Wright says it best when talking about beauty:
“The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.
